PRESENTATIONS:
Staff Presenter: Michael Sutherland, Deputy Director of Community Development
PRIOR ACTIONS OR DISCUSSIONS:
• 2002: List of Merit was established by ordinance in the city code
• 2010-2011: HPB established a subcommittee of its members to update the List of Merit with additional properties
• 2012: The List of Merit was eliminated from city code
• 2019: HPB discussion of re-establishing a list of potentially significant properties at their September 16, 2109 meeting
BACKGROUND:
The List of Merit was established by the Historical Preservation Board in April, 2002 with approximately 85 properties. All properties on the list were surveyed in one of the two historic survey projects completed by Cultural Resource Historians in 1999 and 2001 and were determined to have a level of historic significance that may meet the city’s criteria for designation as a historic landmark.
At their September 16, 2019 meeting, the HPB indicated desire to pursue a new list of potentially significant historic structures to be used for future planning efforts. Future planning efforts may include neighborhood and corridor plans undertaken by the city as well as developing a historic preservation plan.
Following the meeting, Board members were each assigned a group of properties from the former List of Merit to review their current condition. The meeting will provide an opportunity for discussion and direction related to the potentially significant historic structures list.
