PURPOSE:
Does city council support approval of an Intergovernmental Agreement (IGA) with Arapahoe County Open Spaces to accept a grant for Options Secondary at Whitman School playground renovation?

SUMMARY:
At the request of Littleton Public Schools (LPS), city council approved a grant application on March 25, 2019 to Arapahoe County Open Spaces to fund the renovation of playground equipment at Options Secondary at Whitman School. Staff was notified on July 23, 2019 that the grant was awarded in the amount of $298,034.

PRIOR ACTIONS OR DISCUSSIONS:
City council approved IGAs for playground renovations in 2018 for Field Elementary School, in 2016 for Runyon Elementary School, in 2015 for Centennial Academy of Fine Arts Education, in 2014 for Euclid Middle School, and in 2009 for East Elementary School. This playground is the only remaining LPS playground that has not been renovated in Littleton.

ANALYSIS:
Staff Analysis
The IGA is required to accept grant funds from the Arapahoe County Open Spaces Grant Program within 60 days of the award.

The city recognizes the role of school playgrounds in providing community recreation areas. In some instances, school playgrounds serve as the closest parks for children and their families to recreate and play. As a condition of the grant, the playground will be available to the public outside of school use.

Renovating the school playground will allow residents and visitors to be active in their neighborhood which supports the guiding principle of active.
