Betty has a passion for the environment and has turned that passion into a focus on education and assisting others with environmentally sound alternatives to standard yards and gardens. In 2016, she started the Garden Gang in hopes that others who share her same convictions would come together to form a group that not only educates but assists those without the means with yard and garden improvement projects. Utilizing the city’s Neighborhood Small Grants, Betty has held several trainings and seminars that teach others the importance of creating and maintaining an environmentally friendly yard and garden, using techniques that are cutting edge and proven to save and reuse natural resources.
The Garden Gang has also assisted Code Enforcement with difficult cases where the property owner was unable to maintain their yard and faced an impending deadline they could not meet. Betty and the group have stepped up multiple times to assist with such projects. Member of the group also assisted city staff with the Large Item Drop Off events at the Service Center.
Betty has created a community of likeminded people that share the same environmental ideals and serve the community one home at a time. This group is a great example of how to build community and neighborly relationships; tonight we would like to recognize Betty Harris and the Garden Gang for their dedication to volunteerism, the community and environment.
