POLICY QUESTION:
Does the city council support an application to Arapahoe County Open Space for playground improvements at Centennial Academy of Fine Arts?
BACKGROUND:
Littleton Public Schools is seeking grant funds from Arapahoe County Open Space for playground improvements at Centennial Academy.
The project proposes to create three intermediate play areas (out of the existing one), replacing the old swings and climbing equipment with new swings, and a net climbing system that would enable many children to play at one time.
A new sandbox will be installed in one of the play areas and a small shade covering will replace the old one over the sand box.
The cement borders around each play area will be replaced to be at least 12 inches (three inches higher than the wood fibers) with nine inches of engineered wood chip fibers for ADA accessibility and with one opening for the cement path.
The three areas would be connected by a cement path with one entrance into each play area. The path will also traverse through the play area in a figure eight pattern. The pea stone gravel will be removed from the new play areas where the path will be installed.
On the east side of the playground adjacent to the Bowles Grove Park play fields, the school will add an outdoor musical area with five pieces from Harmony Park: pagoda bells, Saturn chimes, tuned drums, manta ray and a swirl. An outdoor classroom/amphitheater with a 12 x 22 fabric shade structure and natural log seating for 30 students will be installed along the perimeter of the east side of the playground. One climbing/sliding structure will be replaced with a similar structure.
