REQUESTED COUNCIL ACTION:
Does city council support appointing Mayor Brinkman as the council delegate to the South Metro/Cunningham Fire Rescue Authority?
BACKGROUND:
In April of 2018, the city council formally executed a contract with the South Metro Fire Rescue District for fire and emergency medical services (EMS). This action began the unification of Littleton Fire Rescue (LFR) with SMFR. On January 1, 2019 LFR will cease to exist and SMFR will begin full fire and EMS services with the city of Littleton.
In order to manage the transition on January 1st, the contract with SMFR contemplated the creation of fire authority with SMFR to oversee the management of the fire services until a time when; 1) a positive vote for inclusion with SMFR district is approved by the voters and, 2) followed by a redistricting process within the SMFR district. A success vote for inclusion on November 6th, or at some point in the future will be the formal action to begin the redistricting process and eventually the end of the fire authority.
Council action is required to appoint a designee to the fire authority with the purpose as described. Mayor Brinkman has been the designee to the LFR Review Committee (representatives of Littleton, Highlands Ranch and Littleton Fire District) for the past few years.
