PURPOSE:
To discuss priorities related to updating historic preservation policy and regulations and provide an update on current and upcoming projects.

DISCUSSION:
Discussion will focus on setting priorities for review of the policy and regulatory documents that guide historic preservation in the city. The Unified Land Use Code (ULUC) establishes the city’s historic preservation program and standards under which properties are designated and reviewed for exterior modifications. Additionally, the ULUC establishes the creation of the Major-Minor Alterations Chart. The chart is a policy document that determines how exterior modifications are reviewed and if they require a Certificate of Appropriateness (COA). The COA is the application type under which exterior modifications to designated buildings are reviewed and permitted.
BACKGROUND:
The Historical Preservation Commission is focused on protecting and enhancing historic buildings, sites, and neighborhoods in the city. This is primarily accomplished through the designation of local landmarks and historic districts. Properties locally designated are required to go through a review process to ensure exterior modifications are sensitive and in keeping with a property’s historic significance. Currently, the city has two locally designated historic districts and thirty-one individually landmarked properties.
