Body

Presented By:

Doug Stephens, Chief of Police

POLICY QUESTION:

Does city council support a Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) between the City of Littleton and Arapahoe Community College (ACC) Police Department to provide law enforcement services on and around the ACC facilities?

BACKGROUND:

The Littleton Police Department (LPD) and ACC have a collaborative relationship that provides law enforcement services on and around the ACC facilities located at 5900 South Santa Fe Drive, 2400 West Alamo Street and 2625 West Church Avenue.  The ACC and LPD police officers provide assistance and cover one another on calls-for-service, accident investigations, and traffic and citizen contacts.  The contact/cover concept is utilized frequently and provides an invaluable benefit to both agencies.

LPD and ACC police officers have developed a professional relationship through departmental in-service and regional training opportunities.  For example, LPD and ACC police officers recently combined forces and attended a training exercise to develop skills during active shooter incidents with an emphasis on patient extraction.  This provided another opportunity for LPD and ACC police officers to work in a training environment that facilitates future interagency communication and deployment during critical situations.

In addition to providing assistance at the facilities and developing knowledge, skills, and abilities in a variety of training environments; the LPD offers law enforcement assistance to ACC through the dissemination of crime bulletins, initiating reports on all felony crimes, and assuming primary responsibility for the investigation of felony crimes.

STAFF ANALYSIS:

The LPD fully supports the ongoing benefits that each agency and the community receive from this partnership.

FISCAL IMPACTS:

There LPD has not incurred any significant fiscal impact and doesn’t anticipate that to change in the future.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends that the resolution approving a Memorandum of Understanding between the City of Littleton and Arapahoe Community College Police Department be approved.

PROPOSED MOTION:

Proposed Motion

I move to approve the resolution authorizing a Memorandum of Understanding with the Arapahoe Community College Police Department.
