Does council support the sharing of fiber optic cable with Arapahoe County?

LONG-TERM OUTCOME(S) SERVED:

Safe Community, High Quality Governance

DISCUSSION:

The City of Littleton, in partnership with Arapahoe County, is striving to create a reliable, secure and high-speed fiber network which will improve the jurisdictions’ safety, communications, and operations, including within the traffic signal system, between facilities, and for emergency services.

This resolution defines the shared maintenance, repair, and operations responsibilities of each jurisdiction of the fiber network. Through specific fiber allocation each entity will be able to realize current operational efficiencies, cost saving opportunities, while maintaining future expansion capabilities. Additionally, the City of Littleton is looking to leverage the geographic diversity of Arapahoe County infrastructure to establish a Disaster Recovery Site for redundancy of technology resources including compute resources and backup storage devices and media.

BACKGROUND:

The City of Littleton, in partnership with Arapahoe County, has entered into multiple agreements for the sharing and construction of fiber optic infrastructure throughout the City of Littleton. This resolution provides the specific responsibilities for each organization regarding the maintenance, repair, and operations of the newly constructed shared fiber optic network.

Establishing an interconnected fiber network for municipal and emergency management services use ensures that the city and its partners can provide rapid and reliable communications throughout their networks to keep staff informed and the public safe.
