Subject:

Title

Motion to approve appointments to city boards and commissions

Body

From:

James L. Becklenberg, City Manager

Prepared by:

Colleen L. Norton, City Clerk

Presentations:

Kyle Schlachter, Mayor

PURPOSE:

Does council support appointment(s) and reappointment(s) of boards and commissions members?

LONG-TERM OUTCOME(S) SERVED:

High-Quality Governance

DISCUSSION:

Council is tasked annually with filling vacancies on the city’s various citizen boards; this year there were 29 positions to fill. Of the 57 applications received, eight (8) candidates were not within city limits, and three (3) candidates withdrew their applications.

Staff provided council with copies of all eligible applications for review and, after such review, the number of applicants for consideration was narrowed, via consensus, to 39. On the evenings of February 24 and 25, council conducted 35 interviews.

In addition to those vacancy appointments recommended by council following the interview and deliberation process, staff is asking council to consider the following:

Extending the terms of two (2) members of the election commission to 2027. This will ensure the city has a fully staffed commission should the need for this body, as noted in the city’s charter, arise during 2026; and

Appointment of an additional member to the environmental stewardship board to fill a newly vacated seat as the result of a resignation from the body.

BACKGROUND:

Pursuant to Section 2-2-3(B)(1) and (2) of the Littleton City Code, the city clerk’s office published notice in the Littleton Independent and the Littleton Report, and on Facebook, Twitter, Nextdoor, and the city’s website announcing vacancies on the city’s various boards and commissions.

STAFF RECOMMENDATION:

Staff recommends council approval of boards and commissions member appointments.

ALTERNATIVES:

                     Approve recommendations as noted.

Don’t’ approve recommendations as noted, leaving vacancies on several of the city’s council-appointed bodies, both advisory and quasi-judicial, impeding the ability to conduct the city’s basic business to move projects forward.

PROPOSED MOTION:

Proposed Motion

I move to approve the appointment of the recommended boards and commissions members, identified by the document attached, with terms of office beginning April 1, 2026, except for DDA appointments which will commence with full terms beginning on July 1, 2026.
