Mayor's Presentation - Community Emergency Response Team Graduates, Trainers and Volunteers
Body

Presented By:
Phil Cernanec, Mayor

During his State of the Union address in 2002, President Bush asked that Americans volunteer their service to improve and safeguard our country.  The three areas of emphasis for these volunteer efforts were:  crime, natural disasters, and terrorism.  The Citizen Corps Program was created to help Americans meet his call to service. One of the volunteer opportunities offered under the Citizen Corps umbrella was the Community Emergency Response Term (CERT) program.

The CERT class is a 32-hour commitment held on four Saturdays.  It is taught by a team of first responders who have completed a CERT Train-the-Trainer course conducted by the state Office of Emergency Management or FEMA's Emergency Management Institute.  CERT training includes:  disaster preparedness, fire suppression, basic medical operations, and light search and rescue.  This year's training concluded with a disaster exercise at the fire-training center.   The simulation included a number of "victims" and "survivors" on the scene.

The Littleton City Council is pleased to recognize the graduates, instructors and volunteers for the latest CERT class sponsored by the Littleton and Englewood Police Departments, and the Arapahoe County Sheriff's Department. This is the tenth CERT class in Littleton.
